Flash, OS X

hail macports

MacPorts is great!

A colleague of mine at Abuzz needed to check on Flash-Java network traffic. Our applications mostly use Flash Remoting, so Charles is ideal for this purpose in most cases; but this was a legacy system using a socket connection, so I thought I’d try Ethereal, which is a more general-purpose protocol analyser. It’s a cross-platform FL/OSS X11-based app. On the Mac, it’s available either through Fink or MacPorts (the new name for DarwinPorts). Being prejudiced in favour of BSD-style ports rather than Debian-style APT, I decided to install MacPorts and see how that worked for me.

It was as simple as:

sudo port install ethereal

Brilliant.

One thing that made me laugh: some fool has ported RPM to OS X. Why anyone would want to use RPMs in favour of ports or APT, is beyond me …
