healthcare in america

02.27.08 | Comment?

I have refrained from comment on the American primaries, because there’s quite enough out there. But the healthcare talk in the recent debate between Clinton and Obama leaves me mystified.

Why is the health of a nation’s people considered an individual’s problem - requiring them to have personal health insurance or, if they need an expensive operation, risk bankrupcy, or just go without and suffer, even die? How can this be acceptable, especially in a rich country that could easily afford an NHS-type system? That the Democrats are unwilling to consider a “socialised” health service is an indictment of the political culture in America.
