AS3, Flash

AS4 naming conventions

05.06.08 | Comment?

I just read Tink’s post on the nonsensical names of the core ActionScript packages: flash, fl, mx and air. In particular, it seems absurd that the AIR packages should be scattered throughout the flash.* packages (and apparently the mx.* packages also). With the introduction of a new technology surely that would be an easy one to get right.

Let’s hope things are more sensible in AS4 (along with all the other things to hope for, like method overloading, non-public constructors, a more expressive core API, etc). Tink has opened a bug report on Adobe’s Jira about this issue.
